Who will lend to you today?

Every way to get cash fast is a bet on something you already have — your paycheck, your car, an item you own. Find a real storefront, see what borrowers say about it, and pick the bet you can afford to lose.

Five ways to get cash, and what each one risks

What each needs, what you put on the line, and how fast it pays.

  1. 1

    Payday loans

You needa paycheck and a bank accountYou riskbank fees and a cycle of repeat loansSpeedsame day

A payday loan or cash advance is a small loan due on your next payday. You usually give the lender access to your bank account or a post-dated check. If the payment bounces you pay bank fees on top, and many borrowers renew and pay the fee again. Ask for the total you will repay and the exact due date.

    Title loans

You needa paid-off carYou riskyour carSpeedsame day

A title loan lends against a car you own outright. You hand over the title — and sometimes a spare key or a tracker — and keep driving while you repay. If you cannot pay, the lender can take the car. Ask for the total repayment in dollars and what repossession would cost you before you sign.

    Installment loans

You needincomeYou riska long, expensive repaymentSpeedsame day to days

An installment loan is repaid in fixed payments over months. The payments look manageable but the total cost adds up, and optional insurance can be folded in. Ask for the total of all payments in dollars, not just the monthly figure.

    Pawn loans

You needan item worth more than the loanYou riskonly the item you leaveSpeedminutes

A pawn loan lends against an item you leave behind — jewellery, tools, electronics. If you do not repay, the shop keeps and sells the item; nothing else follows you. Ask how long they hold the item and exactly what it costs to get it back.

    Check cashing

You needa checkYou riska fee on each checkSpeedminutes

Check cashing turns a check into cash on the spot for a fee. It is not a loan — you pay a fee each visit. Ask what the fee is in dollars for your check before you hand it over.

Before any of these, ask a credit union.

A Payday Alternative Loan (PAL) from a federal credit union is $200–$2,000, repaid over 1–12 months, capped at 28% a year plus a $20 fee at most. You usually join the credit union first, which can take a day.

Signs it isn’t a real lender

Some listings look like loan shops but have no office behind them. Walk away if you see any of these.

  • Asks for a fee before paying you.
  • Wants payment by gift card or wire transfer.
  • Threatens you with arrest.
  • Cannot give a state licence number.
  • Promises “guaranteed approval”.
  • Has no office at its listed address.
